PARODY
ALEX
O’MALLEY / MOTHER
Alex
O’Malley recently submerged back into the diamond tomb that is his vast
vocabulary in order to wave a warm sheet over the icy morning class. Weighed
down beneath the heavy chain of anticipation from his class mates, who each sat
with a lifeless glare, he began in a sprain whisper to tell his story.
Within the
deepest depths of his brain, he wondered wistfully for the wistful words, it
was behind the elegant bars and great gates of his imagination that beauty
belied. Hours he spent at a time exploring his language for the most
magnificent verses. Each carefully selected syllable which he strung together was
of faultless form like that of a gliding swan captured perfectly in still life,
with all the contained strength of its folding wings suddenly released.
The soft
boom of his voice encompassed the room and filled the air with a chilling
breeze. Goosebumps concealed the student’s skin. From where Alex stood, as
still as a statue, silks of liquid gold poured from between his lips and
fluttered freely in and out of the students’ ears.
Their lives
drawn ever deeper into his tale as they plunged further into the timeless
mystery. He managed to fill a seamless sky with stylish language hidden
impossibly between the soft clouds of realism. Defying their comprehension of
space and reality, they absorbed the grand scene before them, a gold-mine
concealed inside Alex, anchored down with his integrity.
By this
point, Alex was lost in his own fantasy that he was oblivious to the ballroom
that had emerged within the classroom. Between gleaming walls of wistful words,
soaring high into the starry sky and colossal colonnades, the figures of his
class mates glided delicately. Dancing with preternatural grace, they possessed
the glamour of dragonflies in their fascinating flight. The symphony of his
orchestrated speech spiralled dreamily, lifting each person’s soul out of their
body.
As the
final sentence escaped from his tongue, a smirk lingered on his proud eyes. The
room returned to its original state and the children took their seats in a
noiseless content. Silence. He looked up to examine the room, which had
yet again plummeted into the astound silence associated with his talent for
writing. No one spoke – there were no words worthy to fall upon his ears. Yet
Alex knew he had succeeded, merely by the tears that formed shamelessly in the
eyes of his audience.
Before he
allowed time for the blubbering to end, he collected his belongings and glided
to the door. With a gentle thud, it closed behind him, closing out the golden
light he shared forcing the room into a sudden darkness.
